Many small animals and rodents make ideal first pets for children. They can help youngsters accept and understand so many things, responsibility, illness, sex, relationships, and inevitably, death. However, some make better pets than others. Instead of the traditional hamster or rabbit, why not consider a guinea - pig? They can live indoors, or out, are a lot happier when they get cuddles, are a lot more 'solid' to handle, plus they show affection in the form of whistles and chirrups! Rats also share a lot of these bonuses, and contrary to popular belief, are not smelly, nor dirty, and as with all creatures, if handled correctly, they do not bite. Ferrets are also catching up with rabbits in the popularity stakes, and are also surprisingly easy to keep.
